2001 Indoor Paddling Races |
![]() |
A great alternative to a winter's afternoon on the coach, these races offer a chance to test your off-season fitness level and race other "canoes" across a video screen while the weather does whatever it wants outside. We're starting to hear news of this winter's indoor paddling races. We'll continue to post updates and additional details on the below races as we receive the information. If you or your club would like to host an indoor paddling race, please contact us at Vermont Waterways.

WORKOUTS |
The Philadelphia Dragon Boat Team, a local amateur team which competes on a world class level, trains 5 days a week from April through August on the Schuylkill River. They use the Vermont Waterways Paddling Adapter, as well, for training and testing. Dragon Boat races are very intense sprints; their workouts are geared for this type of racing. | ![]() |
| Anaerobic Workout -- 1/2 Hour | |
| 3 minutes | full pressure paddle on one side |
| 3 minutes | 1/4 pressure "rest" paddle same side |
|
repeat, switching sides every 6 minutes note: because the dragon boat is so heavy (700lb without paddlers), the damper is set at 10 to simulate on-water paddling | |
| Conditioning Workout -- 1/2 Hour | |
| paddle 15 minutes on one side, then switch | |
|
Mike Packard, aka Packman, marathon canoe racer from Otego, NY, reports that he usually spends 5 hours a week on his Paddling Adapter. He is currently setting his sights on his 5th Michigan Marathon and 16th General Clinton Canoe Regatta. His favorite workout follows:
|
| 15 minutes | warm up |
| 14 minutes | 1-minute intervals of hard paddling with 1-minute "active rest" (easy paddling) in between |
| At this point, Mike changes his gloves... | |
| 21 minutes | 7 2-minute intervals of hard paddling with 1 minute "active rest" between |
| 5 minutes | "pace paddling" (this is at about at the same stroke rate that Mike paddles with racing in a C-1, with a relatively high stroke output) |
| 4 minutes | warm down |
|
We want to hear about your favorite workouts! We post a few of these in each hard copy newsletter, with the next scheduled for early spring 2001, and we'll add new workouts to the online Newsletter periodically. Send us yours! You can use the Feedback form, or mail it in. Either way, please include your name, address, age, and paddling discipline. |
Paddling Adapter World Rankings
Paddlers throughout the world can compare their performances on the Paddling Adapter to the Concept II Indoor Rower (Model C or Model B). If you would like to enter your best 1000m time or half-hour distance into the 2001 Paddling Adapter World Rankings see our world rankings entry page. To see how you would have ranked this year, check out the 2000 Paddling Adapter World Rankings!
Technical Stuff
If any of your Adapter parts are in need of replacement, contact us and ask for a parts list and order form. We have compiled a list of adapter parts that might need replacement over time. Such moving parts as the rope, traveling pulley and the front and rear mast rollers might wear over time and need replacement. We stock all these items and can deliver them to you quickly.
Flat Chain Connector:
If you have a flat 2-piece chain connector on your Concept II model B or C machines (located on the handle end of the chain) instead of the more recent cylindrical-shaped swivel connector, you will need an extra oval coupling to be kept on the U-bolt connected to the rowing machine handle. This extra oval connector is fastened to the pear-shaped connector that remains fastened to the rowing machine chain end when you are using the rowing mode. The extra oval coupling will ensure proper orientation of the chain and handle when rowing. (It is not used when paddling). If you dont have this necessary oval coupling, please call us and we will send you one at no charge.
Heart Rate Receiver
Cable:
If you plan to use heart rate tracking equipment while working out on your Paddling Adapter, you will need an extra long heart rate cable. Concept II used to carry these, but no longer does; we now have them available. They cost $5.00 plus $1.50 shipping/handling within the U.S. Call or fax Vermont Waterways at (802)472-8271 to place your order.
